Welcome to the fourth and final installation of our ‘Brain vs. Processor’ blog series. We’ve been highlighting that, whilst computers are awesome and all, humans are still much better at performing certain cognitive tasks.
In the first three parts of the series we have considered how adept the brain is at image pattern recognition, sound pattern recognition and extracting information from data sets. This blog post is about how Crowdcrafting can be used to tap into volunteers’ ability to spot patterns in moving images.
Moving image analysis
The human brain is wired to spot patterns. We see shapes in the clouds, interpret funny squiggles on paper (writing that is) and can pick out our best mate’s face in a room full of people. We’re masters at interpreting the world around us and we do it every day. We’re also able to apply these skills to interpreting moving pictures. That’s why we spend so much time watching Youtube and ‘Game of Thrones’ box sets…
Video pattern recognition
Crowdcrafting creator Daniel Lombraña González has made a short video to showcase how easy it is to set up a video pattern recognition project in Crowdcrafting.
Video clips can be easily imported into a project using Crowdcrafting’s Dropbox interface. Then, the convenient ‘video pattern recognition’ template may be used to create tasks for volunteers. And, whadyaknow, you’ve just made a crowdsourced video pattern recognition project. Congratulations!
We have some great projects employing this functionality.
Project Video GeoClicker, developed by the Citizen Cyberscience Centre and the Digital Humanitarian Network, acts in the aftermath of disasters. Critical information about disasters is often captured in videos, then shared on Twitter. The project asks volunteers to find out where videos were recorded. This may be mentioned in the corresponding tweet or, if not, may be deduced from clues in the video. This information helps response teams identify where need is highest.
Similarly, the Oklahoma City Tornado Damage project asked crafters to identify the location and scale of damage recorded in photographs and video clips in the aftermath of a severe tornado in Oklahoma in 2013. This helped local authorities plan their response.
We think video pattern recognition could also be used to identify moving animals, observe trends on city streets or perhaps track the growth of cellular life forms observed in time-lapsed videos taken by a microscope.
